It’s Aloha Friday Again: Local Ukulele Players Attempt World Record
According to KITV.com News online, “Musician Jake Shimabukuro turned up the heat on an already hot day at the Waikiki Shell.”
“The ukulele phenom wasn’t only performing; he was helping to break the record for the world’s largest ukulele ensemble. With a representative from the Guinness Book of World Records watching, Shimabukuro started it off.”
“Shimabukuro taught the crowd a musical melody; they would need to play in unison for five minutes.”
“The first world record was set in Helsingborg, Sweden, where more than 1,500 people participated on Aug.20.”
““The ukulele instrument as everybody knows is commonly associated with Hawaii so only ukulele record should be in Hawaii,” said event organizer Leo Daquiag.”
“The current record is 1547.”

It’s Aloha Friday Again: Missed the Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival
Darn it! So many good festivals! Just a few weeks ago was the ukulele festival and now, although late, I just learned of the slack key guitar festival. Darn, I missed it! Both were free and held at the Kapiolani Park in Waikiki.
According to “Hawaii Magazine Online“, “The Ki-hoalu Foundation describes Hawaiian slack key guitar music as “sweet and soulful,” and “drawn from the heart and soul — out through the fingers of each player.”
“Intrigued? If you’re on Oahu this weekend, check out the musical mystique for yourself at the 29th annual Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival “Waikiki Style” is set for Sun., Aug. 21, noon to 6 p.m., in Kapiolani Park.”
“The free fest will feature some of Hawaii’s top artists in the slack key genre including Ledward “Led” Kaapana (pictured, right), who was recently named as a 2011 National Heritage fellow, the nation’s highest honor in folk and traditional arts. Previous fellows in the award’s 30-year history include bluesman B.B. King and cowboy poet Wally McRay.”

Trumps Affirm Commitment to Hawaii Luxury Properties
According to “Waikiki News“, “With the successful opening of its landmark Waikiki Beach Walk property in 2009, Trump Hotel Collection reaffirmed its interest in Hawaii as a resort destination and its commitment to hotel property development. At a recent press reception, Donald D. Trump, Jr., and Eric Trump, sons of renowned developer Donald Trump, lauded the success of the Beachwalk property and the Trump Hotel Collection. The event was held in the sixth floor lobby of Trump International Hotel (TM) Waikiki Beach Walk(R).”
“Surrounded by expansive vistas of the Pacific Ocean and the city, Don Trump, Jr., shared the firm’s elation over winning this year’s Travel Leisure award for “Top Large City Hotel” for Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago. Travel Leisure’s annual survey of readers also named the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai on the Big Island as Hawaii’s top resort. Four Seasons also was named Hawaii’s best hotel spa. See Travel Leisure’s announcement for more information on this year’s awards. Trump, Jr., described the Waikiki property as a great entry into Hawaii.”

It’s Aloha Friday Again: Honolulu Zoo’s 25th “Wildest Show in Town” summer concert series gets under way
According to “HawaiiMagazine.com“, “During early evening hours today, or on any Wednesday through Aug. 10, the sweet sounds of guitars and ukuleles will be drifting over the hedges at the Waikiki area’s Honolulu Zoo.”
Inside the zoo, on a stage overlooking a cool, grassy lawn, Honolulu Zoo’s Wildest Show in Town will begin its 25th summer concert series at 6 p.m. When the gates open at 4:35 p.m., concertgoers may tour the zoo grounds for about an hour – mini-guided tours will be offered to the first 30 people who sign up.”

It’s Aloha Friday Again: Try Waikiki Beach Walk
One of my favorite and most recent new developments in the heart of Waikiki, is Waikiki Beach Walk, literaly two or three blocks of mixed retail and restaurants, along Lewers Street and anchored by the Trump Tower Waikiki Hotel and Condos and the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, another personal favorite.

Trump Tower Waikiki Hotel Occupancy Meets Goals and Expectations
According to the online edition of the “Honolulu Star Advertiser” newspaper, “Trump Waikiki Satisfied with Unit Occupancy”.
According to the newspaper, “The International Hotel Waikiki Beach Walk Trump is declaring that it has reached a critical mass, with a large majority of rooms and suites in service more than a year after opening.
It’s been a long, slow buildup for the ultraluxury property.”

Aloha Friday, Happy New Year……and More Good News!
Tourism is the economic engine of Oahu’s economy, so it is was welcome news to read that Hotel occupancy on Oahu, particularly in Waikiki, was up again rather sharply last month. We still have a ways to go, but we appear to be on the right track. Oahu had the highest occupancy rate last month, 75.2 percent.
