My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhoods: Mariners Ridge, in the Hawaii Kai Region

This hillside neighborhood is located just past the Hawaii Kai Post Office and is reached via Kaluanui Road and climbs a ridge of the Koolau mountains and overlooks Hahione Valley. House lots in this neighborhood are generally hilly or sloped. Because of this, views of the ocean, Koko Head, Koko Crater, Hawaii Kai and the inner harbor and canals are outstanding, many are panoramic.

Most of the homes built in Mariner’s Ridge were built in the early 1970′s. Roughly 275 homes were built by a California developer in the lower two thirds of the ridge at this time. In later years over 150 lots were sold in the upper section of the ridge, where owners built custom homes. Today homes in this area total 429.

The average home is roughly 1,600 to 2,800 square feet in size with lots average 9,000 to 10,000 sqaure feet and many, because of such steep sloping lots, have multiple stories or floors, taking advantage of the hillside and views.

My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhoods: Kamehame Ridge, in the Hawaii Kai Region

Located toward the mountains from Koko Villas is the hillside community of Kamehame Ridge, where you find excellent views, cooler temperatures and lovely homes. The ridgeline area of development consist of less than 200 homes that were built between 1982 and 1988, most on large lots and a mix of styles.

At the bottom oif the ridge is a newer complex called Bali Lofts. These are larger homes, 4,000 square feet or larger, of contemporary design, a kind of Bali island style, most with central air conditioning, high quality materials and other luxury amenities, but with no views.

It is said that the name Kamehame comes from the Hawaiian word Hame for tree.

My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhoods: The Wailupe Area, in the Diamond Head Region of Honolulu

The Wailupe Area neighborhood is located between the Waialae and Aina Haina neighborhoods along Kalanianaole Highway. Most homes here are roughly 2,000 square feet in size or larger and most lot sizes exceed 10,000 square feet. Oceanfront homes along the edge of the Wailupe Peninsula often feature larger lots up to 19,000 square feet in size. Of course, interior homes are less expensive but are still a short, easy walk to the beach.

Residents of Wailupe enjoy fish and surfing. Coral reefs create good surf spots offshore and the reefs also help keep the waters calm along the beach. Wailupe Beach Park is right next door, adjacent to the Wailupe Peninsula.

My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhoods:  St. Louis in the Diamond Head Region

St. Louis Heights is another neighborhood that has some of the most amazing views of the city of Honolulu. The hills in this neighborhood are steep, with elevations reaching a thousand feet. Many homes are located on these steep hillsides, many perched or cantilevered to take advantage of such spectacular views.

This is a very popular area, with many homes selling quickly and at or very near asking prices. One of the big attractions, aside from views, is its close proximity to downtown Honolulu.

My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhoods: Paiko Lagoon, in the Diamond Head Region

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhoods:  Paiko Lagoon, in the Diamond Head Region

Paiko Lagoon was originally a coastal fishpond, fed by a fresh water spring and the Kuliouou stream. The lagoon water level varies with the tides and will occasionallydisplay saltwater mud flats. You will find roughly 20 ocean front homes here and another 11 on the lagoon.

Paiko Beach is a narrow strip of sand that almost disappears at high tide. There is a shallow coral reef in front, so swimming is only fair here. It’s a better spot to kayak or fish. Also, some surfers paddle out from Paiko Beach to reach the waves of Paikos and other surf spots that are located at the outer edge of the reef.
