My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhoods: The Wailupe Area, in the Diamond Head Region of Honolulu

The Wailupe Area neighborhood is located between the Waialae and Aina Haina neighborhoods along Kalanianaole Highway. Most homes here are roughly 2,000 square feet in size or larger and most lot sizes exceed 10,000 square feet. Oceanfront homes along the edge of the Wailupe Peninsula often feature larger lots up to 19,000 square feet in size. Of course, interior homes are less expensive but are still a short, easy walk to the beach.

Residents of Wailupe enjoy fish and surfing. Coral reefs create good surf spots offshore and the reefs also help keep the waters calm along the beach. Wailupe Beach Park is right next door, adjacent to the Wailupe Peninsula.

My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhoods: Diamond Head

Diamond Head offers a great location, close enough to downtown Honolulu and adjacent Waikiki, as well an easy drive to other areas of east Oahu such as Kahala and Hawaii Kai. Diamond Head is called home by some of Oahu’s wealthiest, including affluent retired and senior corporate executives. The neighborhood offers fine dining, private clubs and luxury homes, many with spectacular ocean and Diamond Head views. A quiet neighborhood, the weather is especially desirable to some as it does not rain as much in this area.

The Gold Coast, next to Waikiki Beach and across from Kapiolani Park, offers some of Oahu’s finest ocean front condos, while the slopes of the crater offer single family homes, many with panoramic views.

View Homes can command top prices in this neighborhood with ocean view and ocean front homes being in the top premium price range and neighborhood selection for those looking for nothing but the best.

My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhoods:  Wilhelmina in the Diamond Head Region of Honolulu

Wilhelmina is located on the hillside above the neighborhood of Kaimuki. The area offers amazing views of east Oahu, Diamond Head and the ocean. Many of the homes in this area are older, however most owners take very good care of their homes here. Close to shooping and restaurants in the Kaimuki area as well as the Kahala Mall makes this a convenient location. It’s also an easy commute to downtown Honolulu.

My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhoods: Hawaii Loa Ridge, in the Diamond Head Region

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhoods:  Hawaii Loa Ridge, in the Diamond Head Region

Hawaii Loa Ridge is 20 minutes east of Wakiki and 5-10 minutes from Kahala Mall, a large indoor shopping complex. Located on P’uu Ikena Drive east of Aina Haina, it is anextremely exclusive community. The ocean is less than five minutes away from Hawaii Loa Ridge, and the world famous Kahala Mandarin Hotel, Waikiki Beach, and Ala Moana Shopping Center aren’t much further away. This community is highly luxurious and consequently one of the most expensive areas with many homes having absolutely amazing ocean views.

This gated community is popular among celebrities who choose to live in Hawaii Loa Ridge because of the privacy and security. All properties are single family homes built under the guideline of a View Channel. You’ll find a private park, tennis courts, and club house for residents here as well.

Developed in the early 1980′s, it quickly was a sell out. As a result, eight additional developments further and further up the ridge were built. To say the views from the ridge are absolutely sensational would be an understatement. Most of the more than 500 homes were built to taking full advantage of the view channel guidelines and many have Diamond Head, Koko Head, Koko Crater and panoramic ocean views.

The average 3,000 to 4,000 square foot home on the Hawaii Loa Ridge today will cost in the $1,500,000 to $2,200,000 range while a select number of homes have been sold for double these values.

My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhoods: Aina Haina, in the Diamond Head Region

My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhoods: Aina Haina, in the Diamond Head Region

Heading towards Hawaii Kai from Diamond Head on the Kalanianaole Highway, Aina Haina is on your left, or mountain side (mauka) and is about halfway between Kahala and Hawaii Kai. This wonderful neighborhood offers great shopping, an excellent school district and hillside views that are as good as it gets.

Most homes in this community were built in the 1950′s, however there has been a lot of recent improvement and growth here with many homes being extensively remodeled and upgraded. Aina Haina means “Hinds Land” in the Hawaiian language, originally developed by Robert Hind.

My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhoods: Kahala, in the Diamond Head Region

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhoods:  Kahala, in the Diamond Head Region

Homes in Kahala are some of the most desired in all Oahu and also some of the most expensive. Generally an affluent residential community, it is located on the southeastern shore of Oahu and bordered by Diamond Head Crater and the Waialae Country Club. Kahala is the site of the luxury Mandarin Hotel and is near the Kahala Mall, a large upscale indoor mall featuring Barnes & Noble, Macy’s and the Apple store, as well as restaurants and other boutiques and stores. Kahala is roughly ten minues from down Honolulu making it any easy commute to work for many.

Kahala features both beach front homes and other upscale homes and locations, many with commanding views. Homes were originally built in this area in the 1950′s and 1960′s but many have been either highly remodeled and upgraded, or torn down and replaced with larger homes. Newer, custom luxury homes are more the norm today with average home prices in the mid $2 million range, while oceanfront Kahala Avenue homes continue to command significantly higher prices.
