Honolulu Upgrading it’s Sewer System

downtown honolulu

The City & County of Honolulu will upgrade its aging sewer system to prevent spillage and contamination as part of a settlement announced Monday with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The settlement is in response to four lawsuits filed over the past 16 years.

The questionable fitness of the city’s water treatment gained greater public awareness after nearly 48 million gallons of sewage entered Waikiki canals in 2006 when rainwater overloaded the wastewater system.

Americans on the Move!

I subscribe to and receive a newsletter called “Luxury Insights”, sent by the good folks at www.luxuryhomemarketing.com.  Today I received this fascinating information:

Forbes has an interesting, interactive “data graphic” that shows where Americans moved in 2008.  Click on a county and you’ll see lines indicating where folks moving to the county came from, and where folks leaving went.

Here’s the mass exodus from Detroit:

It’s Aloha Friday! “Spirit of Aloha” Catamaran to Serve Waikiki Beach & Hilton

Spirit of Aloha Catamaran

Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa marked the return of the resort’s sailing tours with the July 1, 2010 launch of Waikiki’s newest catamaran, Spirit of Aloha. The vessel, operated by Port Waikiki Cruises, offers six different tour options daily, from breakfast and snorkel tours to sunset cocktail sails. In addition, a weekly Friday fireworks dinner sail gives guests a front-row seat to Hilton’s spectacular fireworks display.

A Hawaiian blessing and Ho`omana Ceremony was held on June 28. Invited dignitaries and guests participated in a transfer of spiritual power and aloha to the catamaran before it set sail on its first voyage from the Hilton pier, escorted by Waikiki beach boys, paddlers and surfers.

The Spirit of Aloha is a modern, 54-foot motor-sail vessel built by Gold Coast Yachts, the world leader in commercial sailing catamarans.

Waikiki, Honolulu:  Bye Bye to International Market Place; Hello Upscale Mall

waikiki international market

The Market Place still stands. But its days are numbered.

Last year, it was reported that the landowner-Queen Emma Land Co.-was taking proposals for developing the Market Place’s 6.48 acres in the heart of Waikiki. They expected to be done in several months.

It took longer, but last week Queen Emma Land signed an agreement with Taubman Centers.  Taubman is a Bloomfield Hills, Mich., company that develops, owns and operates high-end malls across the country. For instance, they own Beverly Center in Los Angeles, the Short Hills Mall in New Jersey and Fair Oaks Mall in Virginia.

The 33rd annual Nā Hōkū Hano-hano Music Awards in Honolulu, Hawaii

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Anuhea The 33rd annual Nā Hōkū Hano-hano Music Awards – Hawai’i’s version of the Grammys for locally produced music – commenced last night at the Hawai’i Convention Center, with long-time industry favorites and newly beloved performers being recognized for their contributions to the local music scene.

I watched live coverage on Television, over 2 1/2 hours, and was so humbled by the beautiful music and the display of hawaiian culture with so much pride and joy.  It was held at the Honolulu Convention Center, just blocks from where I live in Waikiki.  Tickets were available, and it would have been fun to go, but seeing it on television was good too.

Amy Hānaiali’i walked away this year with her 16th Nā Hōkū award for best album of the year, for her 2009 album “Friends and Family of Hawai’i,” a collaborative album, which features duets with notable local male musicians such as Henry Kapono, John Cruz and Nathan Awe’au, as well as a duet with country music star Willie Nelson.

Jorge Garcia

You sometimes don’t fully appreciate where you live, even in a beautiful place like Hawaii. With the routine and stress of everyday life, you forget how spectacular the place you live in is. What if you were suddenly told that you had only a limited amount of time left in that place?
