My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhoods: Mariners Ridge, in the Hawaii Kai Region

This hillside neighborhood is located just past the Hawaii Kai Post Office and is reached via Kaluanui Road and climbs a ridge of the Koolau mountains and overlooks Hahione Valley. House lots in this neighborhood are generally hilly or sloped. Because of this, views of the ocean, Koko Head, Koko Crater, Hawaii Kai and the inner harbor and canals are outstanding, many are panoramic.

Most of the homes built in Mariner’s Ridge were built in the early 1970′s. Roughly 275 homes were built by a California developer in the lower two thirds of the ridge at this time. In later years over 150 lots were sold in the upper section of the ridge, where owners built custom homes. Today homes in this area total 429.

The average home is roughly 1,600 to 2,800 square feet in size with lots average 9,000 to 10,000 sqaure feet and many, because of such steep sloping lots, have multiple stories or floors, taking advantage of the hillside and views.

My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhoods: Triangle, in the Hawaii Kai Region

My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhoods: Triangle, in the Hawaii Kai Region

The Traingle neighborhood is located right next to Portlock and is bordered by the Kalanianaole Highway, Poipu Drive and Makaweli Street. Viewed from above and framed by these roads, the area appears triangle in shape, which is how it was named. It is an easy walk to the Koko Marina Shopping Center and all the stores and shops that are found there.

When first developed, the area was called Maunalua Traingle and was the first neighborhood the developer, Henry Kaiser, began marketing the 318 homes originally built. Most of these homes were built in the 1960′s, but over the years most have been highly remodeled or torn down and replaced with newer and more luxurious homes. Although the original homes were on the small size, most lots were quite large, at 10,000 square feet or larger.

Most homes in this area do not have ocean views, except for a few located on Polihale Place, along the slopes of Koko Head. Homes on this street enjoy maginificent panoramic views from Mariner’s Ridge to Diamond Head, including views of the mountains, the marina, Maunalua Bay and the ocean. Many consider homes here to have some of the best views of any on Koko Head. For many of the other homes without ocean views, many have incredible views of mountains, bluffs and cliffs where some of the best non-ocean views can be found as well.

My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhoods: The Wailupe Area, in the Diamond Head Region of Honolulu

The Wailupe Area neighborhood is located between the Waialae and Aina Haina neighborhoods along Kalanianaole Highway. Most homes here are roughly 2,000 square feet in size or larger and most lot sizes exceed 10,000 square feet. Oceanfront homes along the edge of the Wailupe Peninsula often feature larger lots up to 19,000 square feet in size. Of course, interior homes are less expensive but are still a short, easy walk to the beach.

Residents of Wailupe enjoy fish and surfing. Coral reefs create good surf spots offshore and the reefs also help keep the waters calm along the beach. Wailupe Beach Park is right next door, adjacent to the Wailupe Peninsula.

My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhoods: Waialae Iki, in the Diamond Head Region

Located above the Waialae Country Club is the ridgeline neighborhood of Waialae Iki. With over 1,000 homes, all mostly upscale and with amazing views of the ocean, Diamond Head and Koko Head.

Believe it or not, in times past, this area was originally planted in pineapple. Originally developed in 1965, 8,000 to 30,000 square foot lots were sold. Today, of course, the neighborhood has matured and in addition to the original subdivision, you’ll find the gated community of Waialae Iki 5 at the very top of the ridge.
